Gusanos and Winrar Guide

Introduction

Gusanos files are most commonly compressed into rar files using the WinRAR application (or other rar compatible softwares). This guide is for the people that dont know anything about WinRAR to those that know how to use it, but have doubts.

WinRAR

WinRAR is an application almost identical to WinZip. WinRAR also supports zip files.
To download WinRAR you go to www.rarlabs.com the trial version of WinRAR (or obtain a full version if you can). Install it.

Extracting files

To extract a file from a rar archive you will need to have WinRAR (or other software able to extract rar archives). If you know how WinZip works you will quickly catch on. By rightclicking on the .rar file you will get options to extract.

Choosing "Extract files.." will open WinRAR and let you choose where the files end up.

Choosing "Extract here" will extract the archive to the same folder where the rar file loctated.

Choosing "Extract to [filename]" will create a new folder with the same name as the rar file and extract the archive into it.

It is not adviced to extract archives with many files by drag-droping them from WinRAR to the file browser. This might cause you to lose any folders there might be in the archive. (this problem is bigger with WinZip though).

So what do i do to extract newmap.rar i downloaded?: Maps are sometimes packed with its folder included in which case you would place the newmap.rar in the Gusanos/Default/Maps folder. Then rightclick and choose "Extract here". Then a new folder will appear with the map files inside. If the map folder is NOT included in the rar archive you choose "Extract to newmap\", then make sure the folder is correctly named.

Compressing

When you have created a new map for Gusanos and want to publish it. You will need to compress it into one file such as a zip or a rar. In this guide we learn about rars.

To compress your map to a rar you will of course need WinRAR (or other rar compressor). You find the map in your Gusanos folder. You do NOT open the maps folder. You right click it and select "add to MyMap.rar". Once you click this option, WinRAR will compress your map (which is called MyMap) into a rar file called MyMap.rar. It will include all files and subfolders in the MyMap folder. If you want to exclude some of them you can double click MyMap.rar, browse your way through the rar file with WinRAR and delete the files you dont want to include from the rar. (this will not affect your unrared files).

Why?

Why rar, not zip?: There is not much diffrence, but some people prefer rars.

Why compress?: Because it will gather all your files into 1 file and make them smaller.
